Spirit of Community Awards - Nomination Criteria

Get into the spirit and nominate a community-minded person for an award

The Society for Community Development’s Spirit of Community Awards™ honours individuals who are community builders, creating healthy community through their contributions and commitments. Citizens of the TriCities, Anmore and Belcarra, are encouraged to nominate outstanding citizens for an award in any of nine categories. The following general criteria should apply to those nominated:

  • They teach by example
  • They value a balance in their lives, which promotes the health of themselves, their family and the community
  • Their actions are motivated out of altruism and respect
  • They welcome diversity of ability, culture and age
  • They encourage and support the vision and dreams of others
  • They encourage others to expand their vision.

For each award, the judges will be looking for individuals who embody the following goals.

Environment Award
 

  • Builds a healthy community by raising awareness through respecting and honoring mother earth
  • Increases environmental awareness, encourages action, empowers and supports individual involvement

Middle School Youth Award

  • Invests their time, energy and talents in their school and community.
  • Motivates others to get involved.
  • Demonstrates exemplary initiative, leadership and creativity in service.

Youth Award
  Envision Financial

  • Respects, invites, supports, empowers and inspires other youth to take ownership of community involvement.

Neighbour to Neighbour Award

  • Takes initiative to encourage interaction among neighbours
  • Contributes to a sense of neighbourhood on a person to person level
  • Embodies the concept of a good neighbour
  • Is inspirational, inclusive and takes action

Cultural Harmony Award

  • Promotes the growth of Canadian identity through incorporation of cultural diversity
  • Builds bridges between cultures
  • Invites and encourages the sharing of heritage

Community Action Award

  • Promotes a vision of responsible community membership which is respectful and inclusive of all ages and cultures and abilities
  • Demonstrates the spirit of creativity, innovation and initiative by responding in a proactive manner to an issue relevant to the well being of our community
  • Has identified an issue in our community and has selflessly taken action to address the issue

Community Volunteerism Award
Community Volunteer Connections

  • Promotes a belief in and recognizes the value of volunteerism to community and individuals
  • Encourages and supports others in their volunteer efforts
  • Takes initiative in celebrating the contribution of all volunteers regardless of skill, ability, age or background

Arts and Culture Award
  Rackel Creative

  • Shares artistic abilities and talents through mentoring or teaching others in the community
  • Uses the arts to promote community

Douglas College Lifetime of Leadership Award in honour of Myrna Popove

  • One who consistently unifies and unites and has given a lifetime recognizing, empowering and promoting community.
