Our Core Values
1. Everyone has the right to adequate housing. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights says that we as a society have a responsibility to “recognize, respect, protect and fulfill” this right.
2. Adequate housing is a basic human need and directly impacts physical and emotional health and overall quality of life.
3. Housing is adequate when it is stable, safe, affordable and suitable as well as geographically and culturally appropriate.
Our Vision
All residents of the Tri-Cities area will have access to stable, safe, affordable and suitable housing, which leads to thriving neighbourhoods and individual and family self-sufficiency.
Our Mission
To advocate for adequate housing for the residents of the Tri-Cities area by:
1. Accessing current statistics on the need for adequate housing in the Tri-Cities area to determine priorities, and promoting independent research as required.
2. Developing and promoting innovative approaches, policies and resource allocation for a diverse range of housing solutions.
3. Partnering or collaborating with all those with common interest in the housing sector including those for whom we are advocating.
Our Goals
The unique power of the Tri-Cities Housing Coalition is its ability to influence political decision-making through the individual and collective expression of voter interest. Consequently, the goal of the Tri-Cities Housing Coalition is to eliminate the need for further advocacy because:
1. Each of the Tri-Cities municipalities has implemented policies and practices which ensure the production, preservation and renovation of non-market housing.
2. The Province of BC has a broad-based subsidy program for non-market housing which provides for all demographic categories of need.
3. The federal government has a national housing strategy bolstered by adequate financial support.
