Family Wellness Month has come and gone with much success

During the month of October events took place around the Tri-Cities such as open houses, family games nights, family recreational activities, movie nights, Halloween parties and much more. The original aim was to have one event for every day of the month. We were able to reach this goal plus much more with the support of multiple organizations/groups/services in the Tri-Cities Communities. Thank you to all who was involved.

The highlight of the month were the two Family Wellness Fairs; one at Como Lake Middle School and the other at Pitt River Middle School. The intention of the fairs was to provide multiple service agencies an opportunity to inform families and individuals about the supports and services that are accessible to them. Much to our surprise much more happened at the schools. The food that was donated by the Ministry of Children and Family and the Coquitlam Rotary was devoured. The presentations and workshops at each of the fairs, covering topics such as fitness and healthy lifestyles to increase awareness about family health, well-being and development were a hit. The child minding was full and the kids were having a blast while the parents enjoyed the workshops and the booth displays.

The Society for Community Development, with funding from the United Way of The Lower Mainland reviewed the out of school services and programs offered to children ages 6–12 in the Tri-Cities area. We were very fortunate to have been chosen as a site for this project.

Our Project Advisor, Dr. David Oborne, lead a Community Steering Committee through a consultative process of research into current available programs and community needs, and as such was able to identify priorities and plan for gaps in our current programs. With th survey completed, focus groups meeting attended, and the processing of the data that was gathered, a report was compiled and presented to our community at a forum open to all. If you have any information or questions regarding this project, please contact our office for more details.
